HDMI 2.1 will be released soon further complicating things.

In a nutshell it supports a range of Higher Video Resolutions and refresh rates including 8K @ 60Hz and 4K @ 120Hz, Dynamic HDR, and increased bandwidth with a new 48G cable. Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the specification.

While there is a buzz about this at the moment, think before you buy, are there any 8k sources out there other than computer graphics cards? and even then are there any 8k displays other than computer monitors available at the moment? No, and you are unlikely to see them until 2018. At this point in time the full specification hasn’t been released, until it is released and dates given for sources and displays, save your money as you will need it.
