USB C and Alt Mode Confusion

Ok so we have USB Type C (covered in a different blog) and we all know about USB 3.1 by now, we know DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) allows you to connect to different displays via adapters. USB Type C ports cannot connect to displays unless it has DP Alt Mode but this could change, HDMI announced a while back that they will be releasing HDMI Alt Mode via USB C.

Officially from the HDMI website…

“HDMI Alt Mode will support the full range of HDMI 1.4b features such as:

  • Resolutions up to 4K
  • Surround sound
  • Audio Return Channel (ARC)
  • 3D (4K and HD)
  • HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC)
  • Consumer Electronic Control (CEC)
  • Deep Colour, x.v.Colour, and content types
  • High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2)

It’s up to manufacturers to choose which HDMI features they support on their products with USB Type-C.”

There are plenty of cables on the market but where are the devices? Good question, there was excitement that all would be revealed at the 2017 CES show Las Vegas but there seems to be no excitement or rush to get these devices out on the market. However, DP Alt Mode took a while to find it’s way on to devices so we will have to keep our eyes peeled.
